Recovery of residues from biodiesel production to bioenergy generation in anaerobic systems integrated

The production of biodiesel has grown a lot in Brazil, due to the recent national public policies adopted. As a consequence, the generation of crude glycerol, the main coproduct of this process, has increased dramatically. Due to the impurities present in this residue, its applications in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries become impracticable, therefore, the costs to purify it are expensive. Thus, a sustainable alternative for its use and reduction of large stocks of glycerol would be its application in the generation of biogas by anaerobic biological processes. However, its bioconversion efficiency can be increased by conducting codigestion, combining other agroindustrial residues containing assimilable carbon sources and easy biodigestion. These actions will consequently promote the removal of organic matter, with generations of intermediate products of value added such as volatile fatty acids and biogas Hydrogen and Methane. Biological sequential processes in two phases; Fermentation followed by methanogenesis, may present promising results. The effluents generated in anaerobic fermentation in the process of obtaining hydrogen, which are basically volatile fatty acids and alcohols, can be used by methanogenic microorganisms in order to improve the rates of organic matter removal, as well as to promote the generation of more biogas as O Methane. Integrated systems correspond to the large measures to reduce the agroindustrial waste generated and, at the same time, to obtain bioenergy with the generation of biogas. In this sense, this project aims at the generation of Hydrogen and Methane from crude glycerol, coming from processes of biodiesel generation from domestic waste oils, coagigerated in organic agroindustrial waste like citrus fruits and soy molasses.
