The concept of synchronous modal vibrations, with their intrinsic properties, is well-known and has been extensively observed and described in the scientific literature. On the other hand, the asychronicity phenomenon is in the border of knowledge, there being very few studies on the subject and even a lack of an unequivocal definition. In such a context, the researchers involved in the project have proposed to accomplish a major work on modal asynchronicity, aiming at investigating asynchronous modal oscillations within several classes of structural systems. The partial results are promising, once localised vibration modes (where at least two natural frequencies coexist, one of them being null) and, therefore, asynchronous, have been observed in models with few, many and even infinite degrees of freedom. Now, they propose to investigate the practical aspect of the phenomemon, throughout experimental works which have never been carried out before and that will corroborate the hypothesis that asycnhonicity is not a mere mathematical singularity, but a physically observable phenomenon, potentially applicable in many branches of Engineering, such as vibration control, signal transmission in micro-sensors and energy-harvesting. The latter one will be particularly investigated at Università Politecnica delle Marche, where Professor Stefano Lenci, with a wide knowledge in Dynamics of Structures, will co-supervise the works.
