The scope of this project is the identification, characterization and mapping of the built cultural heritage in the Vale Histórico of São Paulo, as well as the assessment of its physical vulnerability against climate scenarios forecast for this region to the end of the XXI century and the definition of public policies for damage mitigation. The sites selected for this analysis are located in several municipalities and exhibit buildings in colonial and neoclassical style decorated with imported furniture and frescos comprising churches, country houses and palaces, the latter localized in streets with cobblestone pavements. Almost all buildings were built using traditional Brazilian vernacular techniques based on the use of clay, wood, metals and structures derived from natural fibers. The Vale Histórico is also expected to undergo impact from climate changes, with alterations in average temperature and relative humidity and modification in annual cycles. The assessment of the heritage vulnerability will encompass a physical-chemical characterization of the materials and of its conservation state, as well as an examination of its fragility towards projected climate changes and a study of the microbiological response to the projected climate changes. The investigation will be complemented with recommendations of public policies to be taken into account in order to mitigate potential damage and strengthen conservation strategies. (AU)
