The main goal of the proposed project is validating a production system for Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei, considering: a) cultivation in biofloc (BFT) technology, b) super-intensive production, c) operation in low salinity, using artificially salinized water, and d) with production costs compatible with sales of the final product. This shall allow production of this species in regions not traditionally used for cultivation in Brazil. Some partial objectives were already achieved along Phase 1 of this Project: a) full length cultivation (one cycle) of shrimp with high stocking densities and away from the coastal line, b) comparison of artificially salinized water versus use of seawater, c) no effluent disposal during nursery and grow-out phases. Nevertheless, some constraints are still to be surpassed: a) better temperature control, b) real time technical data acquisition (temperature, O2 levels), c) effluent management in order to allow reuse of water during several production cycles, d) control of biofloc microbiology, e) adjustment of ions in saline water. Pacific white shrimp cultivation under biofloc conditions has been studied for years by Brazilian academic institutions, but the scale up and transfer of the technology to real business conditions have not occurred so far. Peixe do Mar plans to lead the effort of implementing this new aquaculture industry in the state of São Paulo, especially taking into consideration the recent legal authorization to grow this exotic species in closed systems. The Project shall be conducted at the company headquarters in the city of Holambra-SP, (200 km from the coastal line) and subsidize the company expansion plans already in 2020. (AU)
